Seven Steps for Successful Presentation

1.  Complete basic preparation

1)  Profile occasion on which you will be a speaker, audience that is expected, and location at which it is to take place

2)  Define aim (to inform, persuade, or entertain etc.) and objectives (detailed and precise steps to reach aim)


2.  Produce the content and structure

1)  Gather material (sources: books, journals, own experience, original research etc.)

2)  Select material from what you have

3)  Structure the material (types of structure: logical argument, narrative,  formal)
(a)  Introduction: Tell them what you are going to do
(b)  Body: Tell them the main section
(c)   Conclusion: Tell them what you have told them


3. Choose and prepare presentation aids

1)  Choose aids: tables, charts, graphs, posters, OHP, slides, handouts, videotape

2)  Prepare aids 

3)  Ensure the room, equipment, and furniture are suitable


4.  Make final preparations

1)  Produce speaker¡¯s notes (use of visual aids, prompt cards or sheets, script)

2)  Rehearse (friends and colleagues, audio/video recording, mirror)


5.      Face your nerves 

1)  Understand that everyone feels nerves 

2)  Face up to any irrational fears 

3)  Set out your stall before starting


6. Present 

1)  Get off to a good start (no apology, self-introduction if necessary)

2)  Set the right mood (professionalism, right degree of formality, controlled enthusiasm, no rush, good use of humor)

3)  Use the voice effectively (audibility, interest and meaning, pace, pitch, volume)

4)  Use the body well, including good eye contact

5)  Use the aids properly 

6)  Watch and control timing 

7)  Make a good conclusion


7. Handle questions and discussion 

1)  Anticipate questions 

2)  Make clear how and when you will take them at the start of the presentation 

3)  Use good technique in handling questions
